I really fallen in love with Crested wood Fern. It’s a lovely fern, the leaves are dark green. the sterile fronds are evergreen. The fertile fronds, the ones that bear the spores, are not. The fronds grow 10 to 28 inches long and 2 to 5 inches wide. The plant spreads by rhizomes but is not aggressive. It is easy to grow which is a plus.
Crested wood fern naturally grows in moist to wet areas, such as bogs, pond edges and swamps. It grows well in gardens too but needs a moist, rich soil. It can grow in sun if the soil is moist enough. It prefers some shade to shade.
This is a great fern to use in wet areas where you can’t mow or near down spouts. It is a good rain garden plant too.
